Bedsores, Pressure Ulcers, Pressure Sores …..
A Hidden Epidemic in Hospitals and Nursing Homes – Affecting 10,000′s Every Year in the UK – Often as a Result of Negligent Care
Pressure sores are preventable. Essentially, when people are entrusted with the care of those who lack the mobility to move themselves shirk their responsibilities, then the immobile run the risk of developing pressure ulcers. Without adequate blood flow, which would occur in the turning and moving of a susceptible population, the affected tissue dies.
It is the caregiver’s responsibility to ensure that anyone at risk of developing bedsores receives the proper care to prevent the condition occurring. If they do not assess the risk of bedsores properly and you or a loved one goes on to develop bedsores whilst in their care, you may have a case to claim compensation.
Unfortunately around 1 in 20 people who are admitted to hospital with an acute (sudden) illness will develop a pressure ulcer and most of us will know at least one family member of friend who has suffered from this painful, and in the worst cases can even be life threatening condition.
Pressure ulcers are a widespread and often underestimated health problem in the UK and across the world. Regarded as the new ‘hidden epidemic’ in our hospitals, it is estimated that just under half a million people in the UK will develop at least one pressure ulcer in any given year. These are usually people with an underlying health condition.
Pressure Ulcers can be a problem if not caught early enough, but there is plenty that can be done to prevent them developing in the first place.
We hope this site and our free information booklet, available to download above, provides guidance and reassurance for people with pressure ulcers and those at risk of developing pressure ulcers, their families and carers, and the public.
